Fast Facts:

  • Every student admitted to the PhD program receives full financial support in the form of a graduate assistantship or fellowship. In  2008, the Smith School announced a $12 million PhD program initiative, making PhD student stipends one of the highest in the nation.
  • Smith is the only school in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., area with top-ranked undergraduate and graduate business programs.
  • Smith has a biweekly segment on Maryland Public Television's Your Money and Business program called “Smith Business Close-Up” and clips are available online.
  • The school was named the Robert H. Smith School of Business in 1998 in recognition of a $15 million endowment gift from Robert H. Smith ('50), co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of the Charles E. Smith Companies.
  • Before joining the Smith School in 1997, Dean Howard Frank directed the Information Technology Office of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
  • Van Munching Hall is the home of the Smith School of Business. A 103,300 s.f. expansion project was completed in September 2002. A $21-million North Wing expansion opened in 2007, adding 38,000 s.f.
