Research
Professor Gopal's research interests are in empirical software engineering and software engineering economics. More specifically, he has studied the topic of contracts and processes in offshore software development projects. His interests are also in the area of software metrics and metrics programs in software development organizations. His current research involves studying labor and contracting issues in software outsourcing and the role of benchmarks in new product development projects in the high-tech sector. He has published in the Communications of the ACM and the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering

Teaching
Professor Gopal teaches BMGT 720, Information Technology and Corporate Transformation, an elective for the MBA program. He has also taught undergrad courses in Management of Information Systems and Telecommunications

Consulting
Prior to joining the University of Maryland, Professor Gopal spent 2 years as a management consultant at PRTM Inc, a strategy and operations consulting firm focusing on the high-tech sector. His projects included managing new product development teams, market analysis and business plan development for the telecom industry and managing ERP projects in the pharmaceuticals industry
