Washington Metro Area

October 2-5, 2008 • Washington, DC, USA

The DC metro area offers culture and diversity in its restaurants, shops, museums and historical landmarks.  There is so much to see and do; autumn is the perfect time of year to visit as the temperature is neither too hot nor too cold and the area is brimming with activity. Below are some of our personal favorite restaurants in the area worth checking out, along with a map showing their locations.

Roland's picks -- Bethesda

  • Morton’s  - In the Hyatt -  Steaks  (#1)
  • Black’s  - 7750 Woodmont Ave. - Seafood  (#2)
  • Raku - 7240 Woodmont Ave. - Japanese (#3)
  • Uncle Julio’s  - 4870 Bethesda Ave. - Mexican and margaritas (#4)

Carrie's picks (if you're on a budget) -- Bethesda

  • Austin Grill - 7278 Woodmont Ave. - Tex Mex (#5)
  • Levante's - 7262 Woodmont Ave. - Mediterranean (#6)
  • Tara Thai Restaurant - 4828 Bethesda Ave. - Thai (#7)

Restaurants that turn into clubs in Bethesda -- I have only ever had drinks/appetizers at these places, but based on that I'm sure the dinner cuisine is just as good!

  • Saphire Café - 7940 Wisconsin Ave. - Great martinis, sometimes has live music, live jazz (#8)
  • Union Jack's - 4915 St. Elmo Ave. - British pub, so expect that décor. Has pool tables and quite a bit of space set aside for a dance floor. Caters to the area's young, professional preppy crowd (e.g., the DJ will play Def Leopard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me") (#9)
  • Divino Lounge & Restaurant - 7345-B Wisconsin Ave. - Very chill, international atmosphere (#10)

Roland's picks -- Washington, DC (Closest Metro in Parentheses)

  • Ardeo  - 3311 Connecticut Ave. (Cleveland Park Metro Stop) - Modern American  (#1)
  • Indique  - 3512 Connecticut Ave. (Friendship Hts. Metro Stop) - Inventive Indian  (#2)
  • Rosa Mexicano  - 7th & F Street (Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro Stop) - Really great Mexican (#3)

Carrie's picks  -- Washington, DC (Closest Metro in Parentheses)

  • Ceiba - 701 14th St NW (Metro Center Metro Stop) - Latin (actually a Roland suggestion; I celebrated my birthday there and the food and ambience is wonderful)  (#4)
  • Bombay Club - 815 Connecticut Ave. NW (Farragut West Metro Stop)  - Indian (#5)

Clubs in DC (Closest Metro in Parentheses)

  • Science Club - 1136 19th St. NW (Farragut North Metro Stop)  - Much more artful in terms of music, I think. Seems small in space, but there are many floors and little areas (including an upstairs outdoor patio). This is a place to chill and talk (though the music can be loud). (#6)
  • Eighteenth Street Lounge  - 1212 18th St. NW  (Dupont Circle Metro Stop) - There is usually a cover charge, and the bouncers are finicky about dress and the number of men entering. And, it's difficult to locate, as it's just a door in a wall with no sign. BUT the staff is courteous, the music always fresh and interesting, and there's a couple floors with a small dance floor and large outdoor patio.  The décor is beautiful for a club, and there's none of this table-service business. (#7)
