Smith MBA students can combine MBA studies with graduate course work in other degree programs to create a unique set of skills and knowledge. It's just one more way the Smith MBA can help you distinguish yourself in a competitive marketplace.

Requirements for dual degrees vary by program, but generally students take the MBA core courses and then complete the degree requirements for the other graduate program. Separate applications may be required, and some programs may require additional standardized tests prior to admission.

MBA/MS in Business Administration
Integrating specialized research skills
with general management


The Smith School of Business is an international leader in integrating business management and technology. Smith MBAs can take advantage of the strength in the dual MBA/MS degree program. In this program, students leverage their managerial skills with studies that develop research and technological skills in a specific area. Smith offers a concentration in finance option for the MBA/MS degree.

Full-time students may apply for admission to the MBA/MS degree program at the beginning of the application process or in the spring of their first year. Evening and Weekend MBA students may apply in the Spring of their second year. All required courses from both programs must be completed, including a group of electives agreed upon by the student and an advisor. The dual degree program, which can be completed in two and a half years as full-time student, and three and a half years as an evening or weekend student, requires 66 total credits.

MBA/MSW Degree
Applying corporate management skills
to the nonprofit sector


This program provides a unique combination of skills for those who wish to become managers of social service agencies. Elective courses can be taken at either the School of Social Work at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, or at the Robert H. Smith School of Business. This program requires 90 total credit hours for graduation and can be completed in three years. Under the dual degree program, 51 credits of social work courses and 39 credits of business courses are required.

MBA/MPP Degree
Merging public and private sector management skills

The School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland offers concentrations in national security policy, public sector financial management, and public policy and private enterprise. A variety of elective courses are available; however, registration must be approved by both schools. Students may take both the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and the GMAT, or the GMAT alone. The dual degree program, which can be completed in three years, requires 66 total credits, with a minimum of 30 credits from each program.

MBA/JD Degree
Linking legal and business skills


The MBA/JD degree prepares students for administrative or managerial positions in industry, commerce, or government, where an understanding of both business and law is necessary. In addition to meeting each school's admission criteria, students must take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and the Graduate Admission Test (GMAT). Under the dual-degree program, 75 credits in law school courses and 33 credits in business courses are required for graduation. The School of Law at the University of Maryland, Baltimore allows nine credit hours of business courses toward the JD, and the Smith School of Business allows 21 credit hours of law school courses toward the MBA. The program typically takes four years to complete.
