Answers and Winners for 3/15/05 Questions:

Question #1:
There are three graduates of the University of Maryland who have won a Grammy Award. Can you name one of them? Hint: these talented singers graduated from Maryland in 1981, 1994 and 1997. One of them is a seven-time Grammy Award recipient!

Answer:
Joan McFarland, Class of 1981, received a Grammy award for "best choral performance" in 2000 for her work on a recording of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem. McFarland conducted the Maryland Boy Choir which joined with the Washington Chorus and Orchestra and the Shenandoah Conservatory Choir to perform the award- winning piece. Delious Kennedy, Class of 1992, won a Grammy with the group All-4-One in 1994 in the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal category for the single "I Swear." Cedric Dent, PhD 1997, is a seven-time Grammy winner with the Southern a capella gospel and jazz group "Take Six."

Question #2:
What year was Rudy Lamone appointed dean of the business school?

Answer:
1973. Rudy Lamone served as dean of the business school for 19 years, until 1992. Rudy is still active in the Smith School, with his office located in the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship, which he founded in 1986.

Terp Trivia Contest Details

As part of making Smith Newslink Inside interesting and fun to read, each issue will have two trivia questions about the University of Maryland and Robert H. Smith School of Business. To submit an answer, send e-mail to newsletter@rhsmith.umd.edu with "Terp Trivia Contest" in the subject link or write down your answer(s) (with your name, e-mail and phone number) and drop them off with Nikia Andrews in the reception area of 3570 Van Munching Hall (Office of Marketing Communications).

Have your answers in by 12 noon on the Friday following the distribution of Smith Newslink Inside, after which, winners will be selected. The winners, and the correct answers to the trivia questions, will be published in the next issue of Smith Newslink Inside, along with two new trivia questions. Answers will be randomly drawn until a correct answer is received for each question. Winners will be notified via e-mail or phone. A variety of prizes will be awarded, which could include a Smith School baseball cap, t-shirt or decal. Prize details will be listed with questions. You are only eligible to win one prize per contest, but may submit answers to both questions to double your chances.
