Terpedoes Consulting wins Part-time MBA Case Competition
Terpedoes Consulting, LLC comprising of part-time students Kennedy Jennifer Kern, Felipe Moreno-Hines, Andrew Sachs, Jeffrey Wells, and Karen Zee won the 2006 R.H. Smith part-time case competition. The final round of the grueling seven week 39 team competition was held on March 3, 2006 at the Frank Auditorium in the R.H. Smith School of Business. The final round was judged by Dean Howard Frank, Mark Ordan (COO, The Mills Corporation), and Professor Ken G. Smith (Dean’s Chaired Professor, Department of Management and Organization, Robert H. Smith School of Business).

The eminent body of judges found Terpedoes Consulting’s recommendations to the Carnival Cruise Company for the implementation of their Customer Relationship Management program to be the best in what was clearly a highly competitive contest.

Professor Ken Smith said, “The competition between the four finalists was really tight. The oral presentations were all very good. Given the high quality of the presentations, I think it was the written report that made the difference. Terpedoes’ paper was very detailed and specific. It answered almost all the questions that the judges were consistently asking.”

The Terpedoes were naturally delighted with their victory. An elated Felipe said, “I think we owe this success to setting really high standards as a team. We worked together really well and had great team dynamics. And that really matters when things get stressful.”

Jeffrey agreeing with Felipe added that, “Also the different skills that we brought to the table, nicely complemented each other.”

When asked to give advice to the full-time MBA students who will be competing in a similar case competition in the fall, Karen said that make sure that the team works together and has a story that is consistent. Andrew added that it is important to push hard upfront and not waste a minute.

The other finalists were CruzControl (Vincent Audric, Deepak Hariharan, Deepak Misra, Nehra Sanjeev, Chirayu Shah), Drink from the Firehose, LLC (Moshe Cohen, Jason Davis, Nathaniel Forgotson, Shad Imam, Thomas Whelan) and Oceans Five (Ryan Higgins, Aaron Gage, Kirk Waldrop, Alon Kupferman, Jim Bogan).

There was a Smith Community Reception in the Thomas G. Pownall Grand Atrium immediately after the winners were announced.

The Smith MBA Case competition is designed to integrate both oral and written assignments and individual assessments culminating in a seven day competition. During this competition students integrate elements from their various courses and demonstrate mastery of their communications skills. A Harvard Business Review case is selected and kept secret from all students and judges until the event begins.

Teams of four to five students are then given this case that deals with the broad strategy issues facing a company. The teams present their analyses and recommendations in written and oral presentations. In a multistage competition, teams are selected to advance to the final round, which is judged by a panel of business leaders who play the role of the company's board of directors.

During the opening round held on February 20, 2006, eight faculty judges evaluated 39 student team proposals from 188 students in four programs at three campuses. In Round Two held on February 24th, the thirty-nine teams from Round One were reduced to 16 and given four days to prepare their second round presentations. At the end of the day only the top four teams went to the Final Round held on March 3rd. [Smith Media Group, Sachin Agarwal, MBA Candidate 2007]

Net Impact Hosts Second Happy Hour Case Discussion
On Thursday March 2, 2006, Net Impact hosted the second Happy Hour Case Discussion. The discussion was on Levi Strauss & Co’s decision regarding their business presence in China. More than twenty full-time MBA students participated in the lively discussion which was moderated by Professor Brian Shaffer, Net Impact's Faculty Advisor, and an expert on issues of economics, policy, and regulation.

In 1993, senior managers at Levi Strauss & Co., the world's largest brand-name apparel manufacturer, were deciding whether the company should have a business presence in China, given China’s human rights record. Levi’s China Policy Group has been asked to use the company's "principled reasoning approach" to make a recommendation based on the company's ethical values and newly-adopted global sourcing guidelines.

The hour and a half long discussion saw MBA students engage in deliberations over these difficult issues. Students shared with each other their experiences and thoughts as well as their interpretation of the law, ethics and economics of global sourcing.

One of the notable things about this successful event was that both domestic and international students shared their perspectives and compared experiences. This gave the discussion a well-rounded perspective. First year MBA student Demetris White said, “It is amazing that when you explore these issues with your colleagues you realize that these problems are so complex and have no easy answers. And I think that realization is an important part of my education.”[Smith Media Group, Sachin Agarwal, MBA Candidate 2007]

Leading Women Unite at Smith for Day of Sharing
What does it take for women to succeed in business? For one woman—Janna Morrison, senior vice president of customer care and technology services for Choice Hotels International—the secret to success was a series of lists and a very specific career map.

Morrison, who was a keynote speaker at the Smith School's Women's Leadership Conference (March 3, 2006), began her career as a road warrior, traveling six days a week helping to teach, advise and guide Choice hotel operators. She then moved into management, overseeing all the company’s employees west of the Mississippi. But her ultimate goal was to become part of the senior management team, and there weren’t any openings at the vice president level. Morrison decided to see if she could create a position for herself, writing a business case and a proposal. The proposal was accepted, and Morrison got her position. Full Story

Business Ethics Lecture Series
The Business Ethics Lecture Series, sponsored by the Smith School’s Accounting and Information Assurance department, kicked off on February 22 with a presentation by Barbara Hannigan, assistant general counsel and ethics officer of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB).

Addressing an audience of aspiring CPAs, Hannigan said that the PCAOB is private-sector-non-profit organization created by the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002, to oversee the auditors of public companies in order to protect the interests of investors and further the public interest in the preparation of informative, fair, and independent audit reports. PCAOB was formed in response to the collapse of Enron and other publicly traded companies. Its creation marked the beginning of compulsory independent oversight for the accounting profession which regulated itself prior to the PCAOB. “These financial frauds revealed that the professional gatekeepers such as auditors, lawyers, and analysts had failed to do their jobs,” Hannigan said.

Deloitte Ethics and Compliance Officer Next Speaker in Ethics Series
Harold Tinkler, Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, Deloitte & Touche will be the speaker in the second part of the Spring Ethics series. His presentation is scheduled for March 29, 2006, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Frank Auditorium.

Tinkler manages the ethics program for Deloitte & Touche USA, a Big Four professional services firm. This marks the Deloitte US firms’ first year of implementation of its new “Ethics in Action” training. Over 99 percent of the U.S. Firms’ 34,000 employees have completed both the online and corresponding classroom segments of the training, providing excellent timing in support of this address.

Among the issues Tinkler will address in his remarks is the fact that ethics is a mandate, not an option. Ethics is expected to become increasingly more important in the years ahead. The companies that will stand out are those that are managed well, with CEOs establishing an environment that encourages “doing the right thing.” Ethical organizations will be looking to conduct transactions with like-minded businesses.

Deloitte’s approach to sustaining an ethical organization focuses on converting code into culture. The Deloitte US Firms have created an ethics program to prevent issues from escalating and offers a values-driven approach that encourages talking, not tattling.

Tinkler will take questions from the audience following his remarks.

Date: April 19, 2006
Speaker: Dr. Mark Taylor, Academic Fellow, Securities and Exchange Commission
Topic: “Financial Statement Fraud and the Work of the SEC"

D&IT Department Rewards Best Faculty Web Sites
For the past few months, faculty members in the Decision & Information Technologies (D&IT) Department have been busy updating their personal Web sites, taking part in a departmental contest for the "Best Faculty Web Site." An ad-hoc committee consisting of Holly Mann, Jeff Heebner, and Joydeep Srivastava examined all D&IT faculty Web sites and evaluated them on usability, look and feel, and content.

"We were very impressed by the quality of the new Web sites," said D&IT Chair Anand Anandalingam, who came up with the idea for the contest to try to get faculty members motivated to create and/or enhance their personal Web sites. "We especially liked Itir Karaesmen's site because of its clean and professional look and the content was well organized and comprehensive."

Lee Comstock Director of Operations
ComstockThe Smith community has a new director of operations: Leland Comstock. He replaces Tom O'Rourke, who is now the Help Desk manager in Smith IT.

An alumnus of Johns Hopkins University with a BS in operations research, Comstock is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the day-to-day issues such as room scheduling, mail and facilities. “My staff and I are also are involved in longer term issues, especially with respect to facilities. In this area, we plan renovations, upgrades and personnel moves. Along these lines, we will be getting involved in Van Munching Hall's new annex,” he explains.

Prior to joining Smith, Comstock was VP of manufacturing for a start-up company, LHD Vending. The company offered quality, freshly prepared hot food in the vending machine market. He has also held a variety of management positions in operations, manufacturing and materials management for several companies including Immersion Medical, Fusion Systems and Intel.

Comstock says the collegial atmosphere is what drew him to UM and Smith. “When visiting college campuses with my son during his search process I was impressed with the atmosphere of the schools and the people that worked there. When LHD Vending discontinued operations I decided to include in my search universities in the Washington area because of the previous favorable impressions. Fortunately, I was able to find a fit with my abilities at Smith,” he says.

He adds that his aim is to ensure that Smith Operations maintains its high standards. “The one change we don't want to make is with respect to customer service,” he explains. “Smith Operations has a really excellent team in Tina Rollason, Anne Stevens and Tyrone Hagans, in this respect. What we will be looking at is ways to streamline the activities or providing additional services,” he concludes. [Smith Media Group, Priscilla Mwangi, MBA Candidate 2006]

Got Art? ARTstor from UMD Libraries
The UMD library runs a service that we were recently made aware of. This service, called ARTstor, is a digital library of images. While the focus right now is primarily on fine art, there is a variety of material available that could be used to punch up a PowerPoint presentation or Blackboard course site.

The quickest way to see if it is something you would be interested in is the short but comprehensive feature tour available at:

http://www.artstor.org/info/feature_tour/tour/index.html

ARTstor is usually only available from on campus computers. We've added it to the Windows Applications feature of eSmith, however, so Smith faculty, staff, and students can access it from anywhere! Look for it in the Research folder, where you'll also find a variety of other research tools from the UMD libraries.

We want your feedback!
In a continuing effort to improve the services, tools and support we provide to the Smith Community, we invite/encourage faculty, staff and students to fill out our anonymous feedback form located on the Office of Smith IT Web site: http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/smithit
