Interview with Ben Cope, outgoing Full Time MBAA President

SMG: Please give us an overview of your experience as the MBAA president.
The most powerful lessons in teamwork and leadership I will take away from my MBA experience have come from being president of the MBAA. I have learned a great deal from my colleagues in the organization about effective teamwork, project management, and leadership. I have also grown in my own understanding of what it means to be a leader through managing the team and overcoming challenges as a team.

Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April

On Saturday, April 23, 2005 Smith MBA students, family and co-workers
came together in Washington, DC to repair the house of an elderly man,
Ben Blair. As part of Leadership Development BUMO 712, part time
students, Maieka Hansard, Keishana Myrie, Frank Ries and Thinzar Russell worked as a team to recruit volunteers who helped Fannie Mae and Rebuilding Together Christmas in April improve the lives of DC residents.

05-06 PARKING REGISTRATION FOR GRAD STUDENTS BEGINS APRIL 28

Each spring semester current and incoming graduate students can register for a parking permit two weeks prior to undergraduate students for the next academic year. Registration for graduate students has been tentatively set to start on April 28 and continue through May 11. After May 11 graduate student can still register but will be competing with undergraduate students for spaces. On-line applications will go live on April 28th through the Transportation Services website: www.transportation.umd.edu

The Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland today announced a unique collaboration with Reed Smith LLP, one of the largest law firms in the United States and known for a leading immigration practice, that gives employers free access to Reed’s immigration lawyers for legal advice and consulting services. Statistics Day Features Nobel Prize Winner Robert F. Engle III

Robert F. Engle III, co-recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences with Clive W. Granger, spoke at the Smith School on Friday, April 15 as part of the University of Maryland Statistics Consortium’s Statistics Day 2005 program. Engle is the Michael Armellino Professor of Management of Financial Services at the Stern School of Business, New York University. He was honored for his work in developing methods for statistical modeling of time-varying volatility. In addition to being a Nobel laureate, Engle is also a former lacrosse player and avid fan, as well as an accomplished figure skater who competed in the 1997 Adult Ice Dance competition in Lake Placid, New York.
