Student Leadership Profile: Ben Fishman
The sun is so bright in Plato’s Diner
Monday morning that we have to lower the
blinds. Smith MBA Association President
Ben Fishman shifts in his seat and
directs me to my left, thoughtfully
helping me to avoid the glare. “Is that
better?” he asks.
Making things better, pushing for the
bold and daring is what Ben likes to do
best. He ran for president of the MBA
student body because he’s interested in
longevity at Smith.

BusinessWeek Ranks Smith School
MBA Program #25, #12 in Measure of
Faculty Contributions to Academic
Journals
The MBA program at the Smith School is
ranked No. 25 in the United States in
BusinessWeek’s 2006 survey of “The
Best B-Schools.” The rankings, which are
published every other year, were based
on a survey of the graduating class of
2006, a survey of corporate recruiters
and a measure of “intellectual capital”
– the number of faculty articles
published in a list of top 20 academic
journals. Smith is ranked No. 12 among
all U.S. schools in the intellectual
capital category.
This year, BusinessWeek sent a
50-question Web-based survey to more
than 16,500 Class of 2006 graduates at
100 schools, asking them to rate
everything from teaching quality to the
effectiveness of career services at
their schools on a scale of 1 to 10.
Their responses count for 50 percent of
the total student satisfaction score,
with the other half coming from
responses from the two previous rankings
in 2004 and 2002. Corporate recruiters
were invited to fill out a similar
online survey.

CareerQuest a
Success
The
Robert H. Smith School of Business at
the University of Maryland hosted this
year’s CareerQuest job fair for graduate
business students on Friday, October 13,
2006. CareerQuest brought together
employers from all industries and
students from several universities in
the Mid-Atlantic region. Representatives
from McCandlish Holton were available
during the job fair to address
international student concerns about
employment in the United States.
Recruiters
from Campbell’s Soup, Citigroup, Exxon
Mobil, and a host of other companies
answered students’ questions about
internships and full-time positions.
Several Smith students were able to
reconnect with recruiters from the Black
MBA Career Fair in Atlanta, Georgia.
First-year Smith MBA student Pratik
Laheri said, “I thought this was a great
networking opportunity. The employers
attending the fair were top notch. I
also met a lot of MBA students from
other schools.” Laheri advised
first-year MBA students “to consider
CareerQuest as an opportunity to learn
about different employers and to
network.”

Ethics Lecture Series Highlights:
At KPMG Ethics & Compliance Issues Are
in Balance
On Wednesday, October 4, the Smith
School welcomed Teresa Iannaconi, a
partner at KPMG, to its Business Ethics
Lecture Series. Iannaconi, MBA , spoke
to a room filled with students on the
topic of The Pursuit of a Model
Ethics and Compliance Program for a
Registered Public Accounting Firm.
Iannaconi was named the chair of KPMG's
newly created Ethics and Compliance
Committee (ECC) in 2003. She says she
was thrilled to lead this
precedent-setting initiative, and to
this day knows of no other similar
committee. At KPMG Iannaconi basically
started from scratch and built up the
Ethics and Compliance Committee to what
it is now - a critical part of the KPMG
business model reporting directly to the
Board of Directors. The next segment of
the series is on October 25.

Spotlight:
Assistant Dean Christine
Stewart
|
Christine
Stewart serves as the assistant dean for
administration at the Smith School. Stewart
is a CPA and has held a number of positions
in the Maryland Association of CPAs,
including president. She is also a
contributing author to two books:
Community Bank Guide to Asset/Liability
Management Policies (1991) and Strategic
Financial Management for Commercial Banks
(1993) and has been on the faculty of a
number of banking schools including the
Graduate School of Banking, and the
Maryland, Ohio, and Mississippi Schools of
Banking.
As assistant dean for administration
Stewart oversees a variety of the Smith
School’s daily operations such as finance,
accounting, HR, and building operations. The
diversity of functions is one of the things
she likes most about her job. Her daily
tasks change every five minutes. Even though
Stewart is required to wear multiple hats
her main responsibility is the financial
aspect. She meets with Dean Howard Frank
once a week, and they work on the school’s
five-year rolling forecast - a document
Stewart says she is changing throughout the
day, everyday. She is continually
recalibrating and reforecasting.

UPDATE YOUR UNIVERSITY
PASSWORD!!
The University Office of Information
Technology recently sent out this message regarding important changes to the
University Directory Password. Please read
it carefully. In addition to the systems
mentioned below, the University Directory
Password is also used to access Blackboard
and the eSmith Portal.
To the University Community:
In order to comply with state and
University System of Maryland audit and
security requirements, new rules are now in
effect for University Directory passwords.
Your Directory password is used by many
university systems including Testudo, PHR,
Mail@umd, VPN, and the wireless network.
Please note that systems that do not use the
Directory (including WAM, Glue, DEANS, many
departmental systems, and your Windows or
Novell logins) are not affected by this
change.
All Directory passwords created before
August 16, 2006 will expire in early
November. New passwords remain valid for up
to 180 days. If you allow your password to
expire, you will be unable to access
services that utilize the Directory password
until you have selected a new password.
Reminder messages will be sent to the e-mail
address listed for you in either Testudo or
PHR as your expiration date draws near.
To get additional information on password
issues or to select a new
password, please visit the University
Directory Password Web page at
http://password.umd.edu.
If you have questions, please contact
the Student Help Desk at
301.405.1400 or the Faculty/Staff Help Desk
at 301.405.1500.

Update Your Virus Protection
Our installations of McAfee are set to
automatically update virus definitions,
however, when security exploits are
announced, this needs to be done more
frequently. To protect your computer please
manually update your McAfee virus
definitions as soon as possible. To do this,
1. Right click on the red "V" in the taskbar
at the bottom right of your computer screen.
2. Choose "update now" and it will update to
the latest version of "dat."
Of course, new viruses or "exploits" are
most likely being created, so you should
routinely manually run McAfee updates daily.
Update Your Windows Critical Patches
If you have a computer with our software
image (such as your office computer), that
PC is set to automatically update critical
Windows patches overnight. We recommend that
you remain logged into Novell overnight, and
THEN RE-BOOT YOUR COMPUTER IN THE MORNING.
This will download the latest critical
patches available for Windows, and when you
re-boot your computer in the morning they
will be installed.
►More information on the latest Microsoft
Advisories
As always, the Office of Smith IT
recommends that you distrust all
communication (attachments, files, links,
etc.) that comes unannounced to best protect
yourself from malicious attacks.
