Smith Ranked Among Nation’s Best for
Entrepreneurship
The Smith School programs are rated
among the top in the nation for
entrepreneurship, according to a ranking by
Entrepreneur magazine and The
Princeton Review. The ranking, which
will be published in the November issue of
Entrepreneur, rates Smith’s
undergraduate program No. 14 and its MBA
program No. 18 in the nation. The
recognition comes on the heels of a similar
ranking by Fortune Small Business in
that magazine’s September issue. The fifth
annual “Top Entrepreneurial Colleges for
2007” — a list of 50 schools: 25
undergraduate and 25 graduate — were
compiled from a survey of 900 schools and
evaluated based on key criteria in the areas
of academics and requirements, students and
faculty, and outside-the-classroom support
and experiences. This year, Entrepreneur
and The Princeton Review added
new questions to reflect more
program-specific elements.

Smith Holds 18th Annual Alumni Golf
Tournament
This year’s 18th Annual Smith School Alumni
Chapter Golf Tournament, sponsored by Ernst

with friends. The event started with a
lunch, featured a silent auction and ended
with a dinner that was sponsored by Outback
Steakhouse. It was a day for alumni to
reconnect with each other and raise money

shot did not go as planned. The team from
RSM McGladrey has been the defending
champions for the past two years and won
again this year. The team includes Joe
Salisbury, Marc Thomas ‘86, Bob Billig '88,
and Al Weber.

Jeremy Rifkin Speaks at Smith on the
European Dream
Horatio Alger’s American Dream has finally
met his match. Her name is the European
Dream, and she’s here to stay. At least,
that’s what Jeremy Rifkin thinks. Rifkin,
president of the Foundation on Economic
Trends and world-renowned economist, spoke
to approximately 120 MBA students on Oct.
12, offering a glimpse of the globalized
world he says MBAs will enter after
graduation. Rifkin told students the world
has long looked toward the "American Dream"
for guidance in its economic development.
But today, the European Union, uniting 27
countries and over 490 million people,
offers a rival dream. It’s the "European
Dream," one of sustainable development,
quality of life and a “work to live”
attitude.

Update
►Maryland Joins Research Initiative to
Help Students Learn to Program "In the
Clouds"
The University of Maryland is one of six
universities across the United States
involved in a new research initiative aimed
at exploring a revolutionary programming
paradigm called "cloud computing" using
remote data centers rather than more limited
desktop computers. Google and IBM are
sponsoring this research initiative to
provide students with the highly technical
and complex computer training they will need
as computer programmers in the future.
Corporations fear that without an initiative
like this, there will be a shortage of
skilled employees - a shortage that will
limit their ability to compete with other
corporations around the world.

►Safety
and Security Efforts Enhanced at UM
Safety and security at the University of
Maryland has recently come under scrutiny
due to several recent high profile
incidents. These incidents include a
carjacking (arrest made), hate incidents (Nyumburu
noose and swastika at Fraternity Row), and,
lastly, the Peeping Tom/sexual assault
incidents being handled by the Prince
George’s County Police. During this period,
the Department of Public Safety has become
more adept at providing information about
crimes both on and off campus quickly and
efficiently through the use of more timely
and comprehensive crime alerts, as well as
the text messaging alert system. Together,
these tactics have led to a perception
within the community that crime is on the
rise. This, however, is not true. In 2007,
the campus has seen a significant reduction
in crime compared to 2006 in almost all
categories. Violent crime is down 53
percent, robberies are down 60 percent,
aggravated assaults are down 43 percent, and
lastly property crime is down 31 percent.

Can Social Networking Web Sites Help
Your Business?
|
|
Some
experts say it isn’t what you know, but
who you know that really counts. Do
social networking sites bring
entrepreneurs together to help small
businesses find potential customers and
investors—or are they more hype than
substance?
In this week's edition of Smith
Business Close-Up, Tyser Teaching Fellow
Oliver Schlake discusses the growing
popularity of online sites such as
LinkedIn, the importance of networking
and his take on whether or not virtual
networking is as effective as
face-to-face interaction.
Oliver Schlake is a Tyser Teaching
Fellow at the Smith School,
entrepreneur, researcher, and senior
business consultant and strategic
advisor for leading companies and
government agencies in Europe and
North-America. His publications and
research on scenario-based strategic
planning and innovation strategy have
been featured in leading academic and
practitioner journals worldwide.
