Sports Marketing Guru Sonny Vaccaro
Speaks at Smith
It
takes guts to call the NCAA “the most
fraudulent organization that ever lived”
in front of a packed auditorium on a
campus where the Terps athletic teams
hold high esteem. But chutzpah is
something Sonny Vaccaro, a sports
marketing legend best known for
brokering major endorsement deals with
basketball stars the likes of Michael
Jordan and Kobe Bryant, certainly does
not lack.
About 200 Robert H. Smith School of
Business students — the majority of
which participate in the Undergraduate
Fellows Program — filled Van Munching
Hall’s Frank Auditorium the evening of
Wednesday, Sept. 26 to hear an
animated Vaccaro speak about his
experiences working more than four
decades in the sports business.

Student Leadership Profile:
Alex Obaza, MBA Finance Association
Co-President
Many
students find the process of learning
about the finance industry challenging.
Alex Obaza is here to help. As
co-president of the Smith MBA Finance
Association, Obaza leads the club in the
process of preparing its members for
their job/internship searches in the
finance industry. Obaza says that
preparation of the students is the main
goal of the Finance Association, but
the club goes beyond just that. According to Obaza, “We also want to continue to
build relationships with alumni in
capital markets and pass those
relationships on to the first year
students and we made it a priority to
increase the interaction between first- and second-year students over last
year.” Through the efforts of the club, Obaza hopes to grow the finance
community here at Smith.

2007: The 30 Seconds Outlook, by Jack Haslem
“Economists’ forecasting skill is
about as good as guessing.” William Sherden,
in the Wall Street Journal, July 3,
1997.
With the 50 basis points reduction in
the Fed funds rate, the Fed signaled
strongly that for now recession, not
inflation, is the primary worry. What some
considered a delayed response was motivated
to avoid rewarding speculators. But, with
turmoil in the credit markets and employment
data worrisome, the Fed felt compelled to
cut rates decisively. More rate cuts may
well follow with the peak in mortgage
defaults yet ahead. Once market liquidity
has been restored and fears of recession
have faded, inflation will again be the
focus.
►Bruce
Golden has been invited to present a plenary
lecture at a workshop on network algorithms
and applications to be held in Sicily in
September of 2008. In addition, he has
been invited to present a paper at a
workshop on vehicle routing and logistics to
be held in Oslo, Norway, in June 2008.
During the summer of 2007, he presented
plenary lectures in Finland and Montreal. |

Technote: What’s the story with WiFi on campus?
This note will try to address some of the confusion over
wireless access on campus, and guide you to campus resources
to make the most of what is available to you.
Why so many UMD WiFi networks?
Depending on the kind of wireless device you use,
you might see up to four wireless networks when on campus.
These are:
• umd

• umd-secure
• umd-secure-fast
The differences between the networks aren’t obvious just
from looking at the network browser when configuring your

First-
and Second-Year Students Get Together for
Fall Bash
The Fall Bash, the first large MBA social
event of the year, took place on Saturday,
Sept. 29. from 8-11 p.m. and was all by
accounts a great success. The event happened
at Local 16, a bar located in D.C. at U and
16th Streets, and was hosted by the MBA
Association.
The underlying idea behind the
Fall Bash was simply to provide first-year
and second-year students a chance to get
together for a fun night out on the town.
Students enjoyed beer and mixed drink
specials along with a selection of light
appetizers outside on Local 16’s upper deck.
“The Fall Bash came together really
well…everyone who attended seemed to have a
great time,” remarked first-year MBA student
Brian Mok.
A good number of students elected to kick
off the evening with a Pre-Bash BBQ hosted
by Reid Tokarz and the MBAA. The Pre-Bash
BBQ was held at Reid’s nearby house and
started at 5 p.m. Burgers and hot dogs were
featured on the grill and beverages were
provided. “I especially enjoyed Reid’s
BBQ….it was a good way to start the night
and definitely my kind of scene,” said
first-year MBA student Ed Edson.
After the success of this first social
event, future MBAA events will certainly be
eagerly anticipated by first- and second-year
students alike. Take a look at some photos
from the event!
