Smith School Launches $12M PhD Program
Initiative
Last week, the Smith School announced a $12
million PhD program initiative that will
significantly enhance the school’s ability
to retain and attract the world’s best and
brightest students. The initiative — one of
the most ambitious in the United States —
increases annual doctoral stipends by 45
percent to $32,500 and provides research and
travel support. Philanthropist and school
namesake Robert H. Smith, a 1950 graduate,
contributed $6 million toward the program,
matched with funds from the University of
Maryland and the business school.
“The Smith School is investing in its PhD
program at a time when PhD programs are in
crisis from a lack of sufficient resources,
and business schools likewise suffer from a
lack of talent to fill faculty positions,”
said Howard Frank, dean of the Robert H.
Smith School of Business. “We hope to set an
example by changing where the bar is set –
so ultimately, more and more talented
students will consider entering an academic
career.”

Record Numbers Apply for Undergraduate
Admission
The University of Maryland has set a new
record for freshman applications - with more
than 27,000 received to date. Compared to
the same time last year, applications are up
17 percent. The number of applicants has
been steadily increasing for the last four
years. Many schools across the country are
also experiencing rising admission
applications. This increase is generally
being attributed to a larger number of high
school graduates, with an increased
percentage of them applying to college, as
well as a rise in the number of schools to
which each student is applying.

Do you have to be an Innovator to be
an Entrepreneur?

There
is no denying that entrepreneurship is
hot right now – the idea of running the
show and working for one’s self holds
great appeal for many people. But do you
have to have a completely inventive new
approach to a problem to really make it
big, or is there still room for tried
and true solutions to meet market needs?
In this edition of Smith Business
Close-Up, Asher Epstein, managing
director of the Dingman Center for
Entrepreneurship, talks about the role
of innovation in becoming a successful
entrepreneur.
Smith Business Close-Up can be seen
bi-weekly on Maryland Public

21 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, February 24 at

Student Leadership Profile
Corrinne Talley-Hobbs, MBA Candidate 2009
MBA Association Vice President of
Student Affairs
Corrinne Talley-Hobbs likes to work
with people. “I believe that ‘each one
should teach one’ and that everyone
should give back to their community,”
says Talley-Hobbs. “One common theme in
my life is that I love to help people
and to help others succeed.” It’s no
surprise that she was attracted to the
role of vice president of student
affairs, a leadership position within
the MBA Association (MBAA), whose major
responsibility is to shape the student
experience at the Robert H. Smith School
of Business, University of Maryland.
In her position, Talley-Hobbs will
have a number of important roles in
designing the future of student life at
Smith. She will be involved in weekly
track representative meetings,
organizing the MBA Speaker Series
events, functioning as a faculty-student
liaison, and planning the orientation
events for the next class of MBAs.
Talley-Hobbs was attracted to the role
for several reasons. “I sought the V.P.
of student affairs position because I
wanted to inspire and shape the student
experience here at Smith. I am a firm
believer of the ‘leave things better
than the way you found it’ policy. This
position because involves creating a
legacy and a brand for Smith by
inspiring and improving the current
experience for future global leaders who
represent Smith,” says Talley-Hobbs.

►MyUM
Early last year the University launched
MyUM at
http://my.umd.edu as the campus wide
application and information portal.
Since then it has been steadily gaining
popularity within the University,
primarily in the undergraduate
community. While it was initially
focused on student services, it is now
expanding to cover faculty and staff as
well. In its current state it is very
usable by everyone.MyUM, since it has
the full backing of campus OIT, provides
deeper integration to campus systems
than was possible in a system created
solely by the school of business, and is
intended to eventually become the
primary user interface for the kinds of
services currently provided by Testudo
and ARES. It also offers a more modern
technical framework to house the tools
you've been using at eSmith, providing
more flexibility in how we offer our
services.
For this reason, we have created the
new MySmith tab inside of MyUM, making
MyUM a single site for accessing both
your Smith and University systems. When
you log in to MyUM you will see a "MySmith"
tab near the top of the page. This tab
will give you access to eSmith resources
including the Windows Applications,
Smith Events Calendar, and single
sign-on access to the Lotes Notes
Applications: iNotes, Sametime, and
Workplace.
While we anticipate that the MySmith
tab will eventually replace eSmith, we
will not do this until we are satisfied
that it is meeting everyone's needs. We
know how critical eSmith is to the Smith
school community and will do nothing to
interrupt service on eSmith until we are
sure the new site is as usable and
reliable as the old one has been. To
this end, we will be running both
systems in parallel for at least the
duration of the Spring 2008 semester,
and will provide plenty of notice before
retiring eSmith.
So, please take some time to try out
MyUM at
http://my.umd.edu, and in particular
visit the MySmith tab. We welcome any
feedback you can share with us. Please
direct your feedback to
portalhelp@rhsmith.umd.edu
