Smith School alumnus Kevin Plank, chief executive and founder of sports apparel maker Under Armour, donated the $22,500 in prize money to the winning student- and alumni-run startup companies. This year, the contest was preceded by the BB&T Business Invitational, a showcase of Dingman-affiliated companies, which attracted local entrepreneurs, investors, students, and university community members.

Making Money, Gaining Experience in Real Time
Mayer Fund group photo in New York City, on Wall Street trip to visit alumni and friends of the fund before meeting with GM Asset Management. Policy debates and negotiation are commonplace in Van Munching Hall, but in two particular courses there, making the right arguments can translate into making cold, hard cash. The Robert H. Smith School of Business is home to two student-managed investment funds in which undergraduates and M.B.A. candidates handle real cash portfolios. The Lemma Senbet Fund and the Mayer Fund each provide hands-on experience with investing, assigning analysis and management responsibilities to roughly 20 students a year.

Spotlight

Debra Shapiro, Clarice Smith Professor of Management at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, is not only an illustrious member of the Smith faculty, but also has recently been named the new director of the Smith School’s PhD program. Shapiro feels honored to be the Clarice Smith Professor of Management because the title represents two of her greatest passions.

“The name of Clarice Smith represents for me two of my strongest passions: a passion for scholarship and for the arts--music, theatre and visual. The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on the University of Maryland’s campus demonstrates Clarice Smith's strong support of the arts, but she is also a fine artist herself. At one point I considered commercial art and music as possible professional pursuits. Of these two options, I gave more serious thought to music-- specifically to becoming a professional pianist,” says Shapiro. Shapiro has studied piano, mostly classical but some jazz, for many years, starting at the age of 5.

Faculty Up Front

Anil Gupta has been elected to the board of directors of OriGene Technologies, a pioneer in the development of patented processes for the isolation of full-length cDNA and rapid expression profiling techniques. Unlike many biotech companies, OriGene is already profitable, cash flow positive, and growing at more than 30 percent annually.  It is backed by some of the leading VCs in the United States and Asia. Gupta served as a keynote speaker at the BusinessWeek CEO Forum in Dubai on April 15. His paper with Antoaneta Petkova, "Antecedents of Variations in Knowledge Flows Across Inter-Unit Dyads Within the Large Multinational Corporation" has been selected as one of the finalists for the Best Paper Award at the annual meeting of the Academy of International Business. Decisions regarding the best paper and runner-up awards have not yet been made and will be announced at the meetings in Milan, Italy, in June.

Gil Souza's paper with Meltem Denizel (Sabanci University, Turkey) and Mark Ferguson (Georgia Tech), titled "Multi-Period Remanufacturing Planning with Uncertain Quality of Inputs" won the Wickham Skinner Best Unpublished Paper Award from the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS); this award will be formally given in the Annual POMS Conference, San Diego, in May 2008 (it is an annual award).
