Dean Howard Frank to Step Down in 2008
Howard
Frank has announced that he will step down as
dean of the Smith School of Business at the
end of the current academic year. Frank will
leave his post June 30, 2008, to begin a sabbatical
and will return to the Smith School as professor
of management sciences in the fall of 2009.
“I look back with great pride on what has
been accomplished during my tenure as dean,”
said Frank. “Over the past decade, thanks to
incredibly dedicated faculty, staff, alumni
and friends, the business school has been transformed
and is now recognized among the world’s best.
I look forward to continuing to contribute to
the Smith School’s growth and prosperity in
the years ahead.”
“Dean Frank came to Maryland with extraordinary
accomplishments in business, government and
academe. He created a technology savvy business
school to lead in entrepreneurship and globalized
business education,” said University of Maryland
President C. D. (Dan) Mote Jr. “Howard’s focuses
on undergraduate education and research are
both unusual and highly successful. The remarkable
and varied transformations in the Smith School
over the past decade clearly are a credit to
his leadership,” said Mote.

to introduce them to Smith and the programs
they’ll be immersed in for the next two years,
as well as provide a chance to meet faculty,
staff and each other. The full-time MBA

international. Fourteen students are already Terps, with undergraduate degrees from UM. John
Bullock, second-year MBA student and MBA Association
vice president, welcomed students, saying, "Over
the next two years the level of self discovery
you will experience will blow your mind."
The new part-time MBA students also gathered

Smith Team MBA Cleans up Fort Washington Park
Aug. 21, during the final day of MBA orientation,
students were bused to Fort Washington Park
where they spent time cleaning up the park,
which is a historic fort and part of the National
Park Service situated in Maryland along the
Potomac River. The heavy lifting, weed-whacking,
shoveling, spading, raking, scraping, tree-chopping,
path-clearing, and canon-scrubbing really paid
off. At the end of the day, Fort Washington
Park never looked better, and Smith Team MBA
was closer than ever.

a variety of sources, including the federal
government, state government, corporations and

Picked in Top 15 Green Colleges and Universities
The University of Maryland has been named
one of the Top 15 Green Colleges and Universities
by Grist, an online environmental magazine
based in Seattle. The only state flagship university
on the list that also includes schools in other
countries, Maryland was lauded for student willingness
to raise fees to pay for clean energy and other
energy-conserving measures. Said Grist,
"Students at this College Park campus recently
sent a loud-and-clear message about sustainability:
some 91 percent of undergrads voted to raise
student fees in order to pay for clean energy,
when tuition and fees are already at record
highs. If implemented, the fee increase would
eventually raise enough money to make UM the
largest higher-ed purchaser of renewable energy
in the U.S. UM -- one of the many schools committed
to going carbon neutral -- is also doing what
it can to reduce energy use: a combined heat-and-power
plant completed in 2003 received the U.S. EPA's
Energy Star award, and motion sensors that automatically
shut down unused office equipment are currently
undergoing testing."

►Wondering
about Windows Vista?
Vista is currently being tested against all of the PC hardware
and software that the Smith School offers/supports. Due
to a lack of support for Vista by third party software vendors
(Novell among others), we do not currently have 100% compatibility
between Vista and our environment. We will continue testing
as hardware and software vendors release updates that move
us toward that 100% compatibility. Until that time when
we determine Vista is compatible with our environment, we
will not support Vista on any PC. The Office of Smith IT
will keep you updated as we evaluate Vista and determine
the optimal strategy in rolling Vista out to the community.
Vista upgrade advisor information can be found on Microsoft's
Web site.

Technote: What’s the story with WiFi on campus?
This note will try to address some of the confusion over
wireless access on campus, and guide you to campus resources
to make the most of what is available to you.
Why so many UMD WiFi networks?
Depending on the kind of wireless device you use,
you might see up to four wireless networks when on campus.
These are:
• umd
• umd-fast
• umd-secure
• umd-secure-fast
The differences between the networks aren’t obvious just
from looking at the network browser when configuring your
computer. ►Find out
