China Business Plan Competition Finals
Next Week
Next Wednesday, September 13, the Smith
School will host the semifinals in the
school’s second annual China Business
Plan Competition. A total of $50,000 in
prize money will be awarded to three
final winners at the event which will be
held in Beijing. The five teams
competing in the finals are: Aishi,
ChinaLecture, Coolbar, JBI, and Same
Talk. Dean Howard Frank will be among
the Smith School representatives
participating in the event. The dean
will be joined by Liang Gui, director
general of the Torch High-Tech Center at
the China Ministry of Science and
Technology, in naming the winners after
the final round. There will also be a
keynote address delivered by Daofeng He,
chairman of the board at Sinoway
Investment Corporation.
The Smith School, which delivers
Executive MBA programs in Beijing,
Shanghai and Tianjin, started the China
Business Plan Competition in 2005 to
help foster entrepreneurship there. The
school’s Dingman Center for
Entrepreneurship solicits business ideas
from teams of entrepreneurs from across
China, and then narrows the competitors
down to a final five teams which present
their plans before a panel of venture
capitalists in the final round. The
school received nearly 150 entries in
this year’s competition.

one percentage point off gross domestic

How globalization and
localization effect U.S.
businesses
As a global superpower,
the U.S. has the world’s
best universities and a
strong financial system, but
with less than 5 percent of
the world’s population, the
U.S. economy accounts for
almost a third of the global
economy (or GDP). What does
this mean in terms of
globalization and
international
competitiveness?
In next edition of
Smith Business Close-Up,
Vinod Jain --
director of the Center for
International Business
Education and Research and
senior director for the
office of professional
programs and services at the
Smith School and a
recognized expert in
corporate strategy and
international business --
will discuss globalization
and localization – and their
role in American companies’
success. To learn more about
globalization and
localization, plan to attend

Meet the MBA Class of 2008
|
Meet the
MBA Class of 2008
The MBA class of 2008 is 114 strong,
with an average GMAT of 651, average GPA
of 3.4 and 5 years of work experience.
International students account for 37
percent of the class, 28 percent are
female and 20 percent are minorities.
For the third year in a row, Smith
full-time MBAs were given Sprint-Nextel
BlackBerry devices. Associate Dean for
Professional Programs & Services Scott
Koerwer asked students why they thought
the BlackBerry® was made part of
the Smith MBA experience.
"So we can look super cool,"
yelled out one excited student. "Because
they are so prevalent in business... to
stay accessible to classmates and
faculty... to be more effective and
spend less time doing work, or spend
more time doing work... so we can
all have the same tools... to be a
leader for the digital economy and
live the tag line." On a lighter note,
"...to create an addiction... to
get us to come here in the first
place... to have something to do on the
metro when someone is bugging us... to
learn the important skill of thumb
typing."
"I was in contact with a number of my
classmates before orientation started
and the topic of conversation that got
them most excited was the BlackBerry,"
said first-year MBA student Lettie Goodridge. "Everyone was
trying to figure out what model we would
get and what service they would come
with. I think people were counting down
to the day that we would get our
BlackBerry. As a first time user of a
BlackBerry I was very excited to receive
one and very overwhelmed once I did. The
possibilities of what a BlackBerry will
help me do seem to be endless. I
immediately figured out how to message
my friends. I think the more useful
functions such as the calendar, I will
learn to use with time."

Update Your Virus Protection
Our installations of McAfee are set to
automatically update virus definitions,
however, when security exploits are
announced, this needs to be done more
frequently. To protect your computer please
manually update your McAfee virus
definitions as soon as possible. To do this,
1. Right click on the red "V" in the taskbar
at the bottom right of your computer screen.
2. Choose "update now" and it will update to
the latest version of "dat."
Of course, new viruses or "exploits" are
most likely being created, so you should
routinely manually run McAfee updates daily.
